Charlton Chat with Karl Howman & Cheryl Baker

Podcasts

It was a ‘different’ Charlton Chat show that was broadcast on 4th November 1990 as our guests were ‘Bucks Fizz’ star Cheryl Baker and the well-known Charlton fan and star of ‘Brush Strokes’, actor Karl Howman. We also had another guest in the studio - Cheryl’s dog ‘Malcolm’, who she had to bring with her because of the fireworks! The show features Cheryl’s support of ‘The Valley Party’, her early memories of watching football on Hackney Marshes and of course, the success of ‘Bucks Fizz’. Karl told us that it was his Grandfather, who was Chief Engineer on the Woolwich Ferry, who was responsible for Karl becoming a Charlton supporter and he reveals his favourite players from those early days were Charlie Wright and Harry Gregory. Karl also reveals why his character in ‘Brush Strokes’ was a Charlton fan! The show includes all the usual features - the competition question, the ‘5 Questions Quiz’ and the supporters’ phone-in and making up the team on the night were two people synonymous with Charlton Athletic - Junior Reds Secretary Jackie Monahan, who fielded all the calls on the night and Club Photographer, Tom Morris.
